Chatham, IL—Harry Lee McGhee Jr., 87, of Chatham, passed away at Regency Care in Springfield, IL. on Saturday, May 28, 2022. Harry was born on August 7, 1934, in Brookport, IL., the son of Margaret and Harry Lee McGhee Sr. He worked on the family farm before serving in the US Air Force from July 2, 1955 to July 21, 1959. Following his honorable discharge, Harry attended the University of Illinois and graduated with a BA in Farm Administration. After graduating, Harry was employed by the Kroger Company as a manager and retired after 37 years of service.
Harry was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Rochester and loved his family, fishing, and hunting and was an accomplished landscaper, gardener and genealogist. He married Darlene on February 5, 1983.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helen Harbin; and daughter, Vicki Streb.
He is survived by his loving wife and soulmate, Darlene; daughter, Pam Giacomini; son, Trey (Teri) McGhee;; step children, Sherry (Steve) Johnson, and Tyler (Barb) Lakin; grandchildren, Jessie Dooly, Rachel (Rob) Fox, Haley, Nick, and Ben McGhee, Michelle (Aaron) Hemberger, and Andrea Hopper and great grandchildren; two brothers, Harvey and Stanley McGhee; and sister, Margaret Pace.
Visitation will be held from 9:30AM until the time of the funeral at 11:00AM on Thursday, June 2, 2022 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with Reverend Samuel Janssen officiating.
Burial will follow at Mechanicsburg Cemetery
Wilson Park Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St. in Rochester, is in charge of arrangements.
