SINGAPORE — A search operation is ongoing for a missing Bangladeshi worker who fell into the sea on Monday (Aug 22) after a crane at the Keppel Shipyard in Tuas toppled.
The shipyard told TODAY that two workers fell into the sea. One was rescued and is in stable condition, while the other is missing.
At the same shipyard less than six months ago in March, two Bangladeshi workers died after they were thrown off from a height of about 20m while working around a vessel docked there.
In response to TODAY's queries, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said that the missing worker in Monday’s case is employed by a company called Kumarann Marine.
Four workers — two Bangladeshis, one China national and one from Singapore — suffered minor injuries and are in stable condition.
MOM said that the incident happened at 51 Pioneer Sector 1, Keppel Shipyard at around 10.40am.
Part of the concrete pier on which the crane was standing had collapsed. The crane titled and submerged partly under water, and ended up leaning against a vessel that was berthed next to the pier.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that it received a call at around noon on Monday and its rescue workers found a shore crane leaning against a berthed vessel when they arrived.
Two people were taken to the National University Hospital, it added, and search operations are ongoing.
MOM said that it has stopped all works at the pier and is investigating the cause of the accident.
Keppel Shipyard said that it is working with SCDF and Police Coast Guard on the search operations.
"As investigations are ongoing, we are unable to provide further details at this juncture,” it added.
In the previous incident in March, the two workers who died were among three who were working on a scaffold built around a structure, which was atop a vessel docked at the shipyard.
TODAY has reached out to the police for comment.
