SMITHFIELD — A 33-year-old man was killed in a cement truck accident at Greenville Ready Mix, the police announced Monday.
Matthew J. Maynard, 33, of Burrillville, was performing maintenance on the truck at the time of the accident, a statement said.
Police were called to the concrete, sand and gravel company at 79 Cedar Swamp Rd. at about 9:51 a.m. on Thursday. The caller reported that an employee had been severely injured, according to the Smithfield police statement.
It was later determined that Maynard had "sustained a fatal injury upon getting caught in the truck's hopper," according to police.
The incident has been reported to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which tracks workplace deaths.
Reached by phone, Ron Gendron, the president of Greenville Ready Mix, said that the company will cooperate with the investigation. He described the incident as a "tragic accident."
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family," Gendron said.
